Innovation – where technology and talent meet

02.09.16 By Neil Vernon, Chief Technology Officer

Innovation sits at the heart of what we do at Gresham. 40% of people within our business have R&D roles, fuelling the ideas and development that drive the solutions we take to our customers. Of course, this hinges on technology, but finding and nurturing the right talent plays an integral role. It is our bright, motivated individuals that bring the technology to life.

Our newly opened Innovation Labs in Bristol sits at the heart of this philosophy. Bristol has long held its reputation for technology, and continues to grow in vibrancy as one of the UK’s key digital hubs. Part of what makes this city special is its strong skills base and strength of the local universities.

Talent development is one of my passions, and I am proud of Gresham’s links to academia, helping to educate and nurture the brightest young minds as they explore where a career in IT and financial services might take them. Our local team is active in technology forums and meetups in the Bristol, and has links with Bristol University and the University of the West of England (UWE), delivering lunch time talks to graduates in their final year. The collaboration between education and industry is important, as we nurture the next generation of top talent through into British software development.

Every year, we recruit a number of exceptional graduates into direct entry roles to work alongside our experienced teams, giving them the opportunity to put their learning into practice immediately.

Harry Daniels is a Graduate Technical Analyst within our Application Support team:

From my first day I have been learning new skills and getting involved with Gresham’s latest products such Clareti-as-a-Service. Not only have my technical skills such as XML, SQL, Linux and AWS improved but so have my interpersonal skills through communicating with all members of Gresham to solve technical issues. Gresham has provided me external training to fast track my knowledge with Linux and I am hoping to be RedHat certified by next year.”

Vlad Lazarov is a Software Engineer:

Gresham was the first company I joined and it has been very exciting so far. I have gained deeper understanding and wider practical experience with both Java and JavaScript as well as end-to-end testing, build automation and long term strategic planning. But the best thing so far has been working with an amazing team – friendly, helpful, knowledgeable, dependable.”

We take pride in building our projects around our people, supporting them as they take a proactive approach to shaping their role. With a balance of support and the right level of trust, this is when the best ideas start to fly.
